Within the K-HEALTHinAIR pills (K-pills), we will study different issues affecting IAQ and potential solutions that can be applied to achieve healthier indoors.

K-HEALTHinAIR overarching goal is to evaluate, on the basis of scientific evidence, the effects of indoor air quality on health. Research activities will be based on an extensive monitoring campaign of chemical and biological indoor air pollutants in several highly representative locations in Europe.

In parallel, K-HEALTHinAIR aims at an in-depth analysis of pollutant sources, interactions, and main correlations with health problems conducted through theoretical analysis, clinical trials, and tests (including in vivo and in vitro approaches). The project will provide cost-effective and easy-to-implement enforcement measures to monitor and improve indoor air quality, as well as guidelines to support real-life interventions.

To achieve its main goal,

Implement a IAQ monitoring campaign in 9 relevant scenarios (hospital, metro station, market, nursing home, canteen, students’ residence, lecture hall, and school).

Collect complementary information to the IAQ monitoring of scenarios, mainly public health data from health surveillance systems.

Analyse the health effects of IAQ in multi-pollutant settings, to identify the main determinants of both acute and chronic effects

Identify and characterize the sources of indoor air pollution, including interactions between indoor and outdoor air quality

Design solutions and plans of intervention to improve IAQ in each representative scenario and high-risk outpatients according to the monitored information and health effects diagnosis

Generate precise guidance for the identification of determinants and support for future interventions

Develop and implement an open-access platform for collecting and sharing the information and knowledge generated

Propose solid scientific evidence to review and update IAQ standards and improve existing regulations

Engage with public authorities and other key groups to validate the usability, relevance, and quality of knowledge developed and shared through open publications

Promote the open-access platform at the EU level, implementing dissemination and training actions to increase awareness of the project’s achievements, their value, and benefits for society as a whole
